Giant Redwood

Also inside the Fairy Glen you will find a spectacular specimen of Giant Redwood.

  • Very large and long-lived evergreen redwood conifer

  • A huge tree with a flared base to its trunk

  • One of the largest growing trees in the world

  • Height up to 52m in the UK and up to 70m in the Sierras

  • Can live for over 3,000 years

  • Reddish, rough, spongy bark which protects the tree from forest fires

  • Leaves are small, scale-like and arranged in spirals

  • Provides nectar and pollen for bees

Due to prolific logging in the past in North America, it is now under threat and is listed as an endangered species.
