Turkey Oak

Our magnificent Turkey Oak is rightly situated in a prime position in the centre of the park, just off the gravel pathway leading to the middle of Cypress Avenue.

  • Deciduous tree (loses leaves in winter)

  • A “veteran tree” - a tree of particular interest because of its age, size, condition and history

  • Found in 1735, native to SE Europe and Asia Minor

  • Wind-pollinated catkins, appearing in May - June

  • It has deep, wedge-shaped fissures in its bark

  • Acorn cups are enveloped in whiskers, making it easy to identify even in winter

  • Acorns are eaten by both birds and animals but take 18 months to mature

Turkey wood does not weather well. It is commonly used for BBQ fuel.
